For the assembly elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh early next year, political parties are within the process of correcting their social equations and forming political alliances. BSP joined hands with Akali Dal in Punjab, but Mayawati has decided to contest elections alone in UP. However, it had been politically favorable for the BSP to enter the electoral fray in UP as compared to other states and it took the party to the heights of power. Even after this, why is Mayawati not able to forge an alliance with any party in UP this time?

BSP has entered the electoral fray thrice in its political career spanning three and a half decades with different parties in Uttar Pradesh during which it got political advantage whenever . The BSP contested the assembly elections in 1993 with the SP and tried its luck in 1996 by joining hands with the Congress. After this, within the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BSP contested the elections along side the SP and therefore the RLD. However, the BSP alliance couldn’t last longer than the other party.

Kanshi Ram formed the Bahujan Samaj Party within the year 1984 to make social consciousness and obtain political rights within the Dalit community. BSP didn’t get any success within the first two elections. The account of BSP was opened within the 1991 assembly elections. BSP’s 12 MLAs managed to win and therefore the party got 10.26 per cent votes. With this election, the BSP saw political hope for itself in UP and a replacement political consciousness was awakened within the Dalit community.

BSP joined hands with SP for the primary time

After the Babri demolition in Ayodhya, the Kalyan Singh-led BJP government of UP fell, because of which the assembly elections were held within the year 1993. Kanshi Ram and Mulayam Singh Yadav joined hands to prevent BJP from coming to power in Ram Mandir wave. BSP-SP together exhausted BJP from UP, which both parties got tremendous benefit. BSP went from 12 to 67 seats and SP got 109 seats. Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister, but in 1995 the SP-BSP alliance broke down.

However, in 1993, the advantage of the SP alliance was that the BSP reached the throne of power for the primary time. Mayawati became the Chief Minister of the state for the primary time in 1995, but this was possible with the support of BJP. The BSP formed the govt with the BJP after the alliance with the SP was broken. during this way, the primary Dalit woman was ready to sit on the chief minister’s chair within the state.

BSP fought elections in 1996 with the support of Congress

Mayawati’s government couldn’t last long and fell after six months, because of which assembly elections were held within the year 1996 in UP. during this election, the BSP contested the election in alliance with the Congress. Unlike the SP-BSP alliance, the Congress didn’t have a miracle, but the BSP’s votes increased tremendously. In 1991, the BSP, which was confined to 12 assembly seats by getting 10.26 percent votes, had captured 67 seats in 1996 with 27.73 vote percentage. No party got majority during this election, because of which President’s rule was imposed within the state.

After the assembly elections, the BSP broke the alliance with the Congress and formed the govt with the BJP in 1997. Mayawati once more succeeded in becoming the Chief Minister, but resigned after six months. After this, Kalyan Singh, Om Prakash and Rajnath Singh became Chief Ministers from BJP. BJP broke all the BSP MLAs and merged them with them.

BSP got majority within the year 2007

In the 2002 elections, once more no party got a majority, because of which the BSP again formed the govt with the support of the BJP and Mayawati once more became the Chief Minister. during this way, the BSP, moving forward on the steps of the alliance, was ready to form a government of full majority in Uttar Pradesh within the year 2007, but after being ousted from power in 2012 after five years, the graph of the party has steadily declined. things became such within the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the account of BSP wasn’t even opened and within the 2017 assembly elections, it had been reduced to 19 seats.

2019 alliance brought life to BSP

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BSP chief Mayawati entered the electoral fray along side SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD. Mayawati’s BSP got the most important advantage of this alliance while SP and RLD didn’t get any political advantage. within the Lok Sabha, the BSP became a celebration with 10 MPs from zero. SP was reduced to five seats while RLJD’s Ajit Singh and his son Jayant Chaudhary couldn’t win either. However, Mayawati broke the alliance with SP and RLD only after the Lok Sabha elections.

At an equivalent time, now within the 2022 assembly elections, from BJP to SP, BSP chief Mayawati has announced that she is going to not contest the elections along side any party. She had said during the elections to the legislature itself that she wouldn’t form an alliance with any party in UP. However, from Congress to Asaduddin Owaisi are within the process of forming an alliance with BSP, but they might not get the green signal of Mayawati. In such a situation, it’s to be seen what charisma Mayawati is in a position to point out by coming alone within the field of 2022?
